In response to the serious train accident, life in Greece was almost paralyzed on Wednesday: seafarers, bus drivers, doctors and teachers, but also the entire public sector went on strike 24 hours a day. This caused chaos, especially in the major cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.
The country’s largest unions had called for the strike. The state’s privatization policies have been criticized for the serious train accident that killed 57 people last week. The unions are also demanding a full investigation into the accident. A passenger train ended up on a track on which an oncoming freight train was traveling due to a wrong switch position.
The investigation into the accident has already revealed numerous serious errors within the state railway company OSE. Moreover, all governments for the past two decades had criminally neglected the Greek railway line, it was said.
