The French Senate yesterday approved raising the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64. Article 7 of the pension reform, which postpones the retirement age, passed with 201 votes in favor and 115 votes against. This is the main article of the pension reform project.

The votes against came mainly from the socialist, communist and environmental groups, according to research by the Senate.

Speaking to BFMTV, French Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt highlighted the “very large” majority and criticized the behavior of the left.

However, lawmakers must examine and approve the full bill before the end of the week, which includes a pension revaluation to 85 percent of the minimum interprofessional salary, about 1,200 euros net.

This bill has met society’s response to the street. Last Tuesday was the sixth major mobilization in just a month and a half against pension reform. More than 3.5 million people gathered at the demonstrations on Tuesday, according to the unions (1.28 million people according to government data). Tuesday’s strike was also widely followed in public transport and schools in Ipar Euskal Herria.

The main unions have called for new ones demonstrations for Saturdayindicating that “the government must now withdraw its project”.
