An innocent beaver is currently causing a stir in the municipality of Wilhering in Upper Austria. According to the authorities, the rodent construction on the Mühlbach should be removed – but the Greens absolutely want to prevent this and fight for “Willi”.
“Dear people, please don’t destroy the dam! I am a useful creature” – children from Wilhering have written down their feelings about beaver “Willi”, who built a house on the Mühlbach and now has to leave, according to the authorities.
Bach must be kept free
But why does the rodent actually have to “move”? The beaver settled on a regulated creek, which authorities say means the municipality would be liable for damages if the creek was not kept clear and flooding occurred, for example during heavy rainfall.
“Construction should not be demolished”
And that causes problems: “The building simply cannot be demolished, which is why we have called for the stream section to be renovated. Unfortunately, that will be too late,” says Doris Eisenriegler of the Greens. She sees no immediate danger of flooding and hopes to gain time to arrive at a better solution.
“Willi” is moving
SP local boss Mario Mühlböck confirms to the “Krone” that he does not want to do anything to hurt “Willi”: “According to the authorities, we have to remove the building. But I hope that ‘Willi’ can be moved somehow and not everything needs to be destroyed.” A declaration of nature conservation is still awaited, then we’ll see.
