EU countries have approved the planned visa waiver for Kosovo from early next year. The Council voted in favor of a corresponding draft law, according to which Kosovars can enter the EU without a visa for a maximum period of 90 days.
The visa waiver will apply from the entry into force of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which is scheduled for November 2023, or else from 1 January 2024. The EU Parliament has yet to approve it.
The decision was made after a six-year delay
At the end of last year, EU countries and the European Parliament agreed to lift the visa requirement for citizens of Kosovo. The decision was taken after a six-year delay, the EU Commission had already proposed a visa waiver for Kosovo in 2016.
“We have reason to be happy,” said ÖVP MEP Lukas Mandl. “But we also have to ask ourselves why some decisions that improve the lives of many and harm no one sometimes take so long in the EU.”
