These are the main challenges the French president will face during his second term in office.
After five years marked by strong social opposition, the health crisis and the war in Ukraine, the Liberal’s second term Emmanuel Macron confronted with these six key questions:
social break: France is facing a strong socio-economic rift, something that the far-right Marine Le Pen has been able to interpret very well. The winner of this election will have to build bridges to those who feel excluded from economic progress and avoid social conflict.
Legislative majority? The new president will need to secure a majority in the National Assembly elections on June 12 and 19 to implement his program. Currently Macron’s party La República en Marcha (LREM) occupies 267 of the 577 seats, which puts him in control of that chamber along with the 57 of the centrist MoDem, his ally. And beware: the far right, although defeated in the presidential election, has achieved the best result in its history.
war in Ukraine: France has so far played a prominent diplomatic role in the conflict and will continue to play that role. The end of the war is important so that the economic impact is not too great.
Economic recovery/inflation: Rising prices and slower growth driven by conflict threaten post-pandemic economic momentum. In order to finance the promises of the election agenda, it is essential to find the rhythm.
pension reform: Macron promised to push through the parked pension reform, though he has admitted some flexibility to avoid further antagonizing the left-wing voter. With his re-election, the expected change is again a big deal.
Ecology/Energy: The continuation of the ecological transition and the path to the end of dependence on foreign energy are an important issue, especially for the progressive electorate with whom Macron wants to win favor.
