A message of power? – That’s why the Chinese Xi Jinping drinks from two cups

Date:

As routinely as Chinese President Xi Jinping was confirmed for a third term Friday before the People’s Congress in Beijing, one particular detail caught his eye. There were two cups on the table in front of him during the conference – but everyone else had only one. Is this a subtle display of power?

It is well known that tea plays a special role in Asian culture, but no one suspects that there is political symbolism behind it. Still, the two cups raise questions in the precisely choreographed ceremony.

Only on the 69-year-old’s chair were two prepared cups of white tea. Other members of the leadership team each had to settle for a single cup.

Not the first double cup
The state media did not explain this special treatment. Even on China’s heavily censored social media, there was no discussion. However, BBC journalist Celia Hatton concluded that it could be a subtle display of power. “Even with little things like two cups, Xi Jinping can stand out,” says Hatton.

Symbols play a big part in Chinese politics – and have for a long time. Previously, only emperors were allowed to wear yellow robes. However, the two cups are not completely new for Xi Jinping. In 2021, the president was seen with two cups in front of him for the first time.
