AUA parent company Lufthansa will not fly to the Iranian capital Tehran until Saturday. The reason for this is the threat of escalation between Iran and Israel. However, the AUA does not cancel flights.
However, the departure of the AUA plane from Vienna will be postponed by a few hours “to keep the time between landing and departure in Tehran as short as possible,” an AUA spokeswoman said on Thursday. “Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines arrive at the same safety assessment for the situation on site.” However, there are employment law reasons for the different handling.
The spokeswoman also explained that overnight stays in Tehran, the so-called stopover, would be suspended until Saturday as a precaution. Due to Austrian’s short flight time compared to other airlines, it is possible to fly Vienna-Tehran-Vienna without an overnight stay within the crew’s legally permitted working hours. Lufthansa said that for safety reasons the airline did not want to allow the crew to disembark to spend the night in Tehran, as is necessary under labor law due to the length of the flight route.
Serious threats between Israel and Iran
Lufthansa’s decision came after Iran and Israel threatened each other with attacks on Wednesday. “The evil regime has made a mistake and must be punished, and it will be,” Iran’s Supreme Religious Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Moments later, Israel threatened to attack Iran if the country attacked Israeli territory from its territory. On April 1, the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital was reportedly attacked from the air by Israeli warplanes. Up to sixteen people were killed, including seven senior officers of the Revolutionary Guards, the second pillar of the Iranian armed forces, which is responsible for, among other things, foreign operations. Iran and Israel have been arch enemies since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.
