It should be just as hot in Spain this weekend, especially on the Mediterranean coast, as it usually is in June or July. The national weather service Aemet assumes more than 30 degrees Celsius in Murcia. In other parts of the country it is also getting too hot for the time of year.
On the popular holiday island of Mallorca, which was still struggling with snow chaos two weeks ago, it is pleasant around 22 degrees. In general, the climate in Spain, as in other parts of Europe, has been getting hotter and drier for years. Last year, peak temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius were measured.
Restrictions on drinking water?
Finally, there was less precipitation than normal in the autumn and winter of 2022. The reservoirs are currently on average just over 40 percent full. This is lower than the average of the past ten years (58 percent).
The situation is particularly difficult in Andalusia and Catalonia. The reservoirs there are only about a quarter full. In Catalonia, which includes Barcelona, for example, the government has already restricted water consumption in agriculture and industry. In parks and gardens, only trees may be watered. From the autumn, private drinking water consumption can be limited if the rain does not materialise. That is what the head of the regional water board, Samuel Reyes, told the newspaper “El País”.
Temperatures in the Mediterranean are expected to rise above 30 degrees this weekend. That would be a heat record for a march in Spain. In addition, the risk of severe forest fires remains high, just like last year.
