The BBC’s decision to fire Gary Lineker of the “Match of the Day” program that he himself presented has a wave of solidarity from his classmates and a massive boycott of programming. The chain, in turn, states that the English football legend’s critique of British immigration policy violates the ban imposed on its journalists from expressing political opinions on social networks.
The BBC announced on Friday the decision to sack the football program presenter Gary Lineker, who had presented it since 1999, after his controversial statements.
The former footballer published a few posts on the Twitter platform criticizing UK immigration policy and given the uses language like that of Nazi Germany. As reported by the BBC, this goes against the chain’s recommendations, which prohibits its journalists from expressing political opinions in social networks and that obliges them to remain impartial in this regard.
In the past, Lineker himself has been in trouble for his political views on social media. This time, however, his political views on the United Kingdom’s immigration plan have not gone unnoticed by the British chain, which ensures that its recent activities violates the company’s social media guidelines.
Just minutes after Gary Lineker’s farewell, many of the key players of the “Match of the Day” program have decided to oppose the chain’s attitude. For this reason, ex-football players and employees of the program like the legend Alan Shearer, Ian Wright or Micah Richards will not participate in the broadcast of this Saturday.
In addition, Premier League playersthe top league in English football, have joined the boycott to the chain and do not have to grant interviews to the program, the English federation confirms. Despite this, the program will continue without its greatest exponents.
