Next grotesque – kindergarten scandal: this is how the controls worked

Date:

While the taxpayer operators made a nice living from luxury cars & Co., the magistrate’s inspectors provided scratched armchairs, carpets and sandwiches. After the bankruptcy of the Minibambini network, hundreds of children need new shelters.

Next grotesque in the scandal surrounding the bankrupt nursery network Minibambini. While the operating clan made good money with expensive cars from taxpayers’ money (almost 40 million euros in subsidy), the city guards provided incorrectly placed garbage cans.

An answer to a question from alderman Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos) of Education shows the following picture. The last twelve Minibambini locations with 800 children were supervised a total of 65 times from 2009 to 2023. And these shortcomings were found by the auditors of MA 11:

  • Hygiene: scratched armchairs, damaged changing pad, no soap dispensers
  • Personal: No further training certificates from teachers, employees were absent due to vacation.
  • Security: Trip hazard due to rolled up rugs, rubbish bin near the escape route
  • Pedagogy: Children were not allowed to bake their own bread, the furniture was inappropriate.
  • The wardrobe were with Cameras checked, but the parents were not informed.

All in all, not up to par, but rather trivial compared to the alleged misuse of funding in the millions. It was only the Court of Audit of the City that brought it to light. In February. But the complaints go back many years. For example, construction companies (also broke) had supplied the food. The monthly contributions from the parents were collected in cash (!).

Members of the working family had rented their own premises to the kindergarten (i.e. themselves) at completely exorbitant prices. According to the Court of Auditors, private traffic fines were paid from the kindergarten fund.

Of course, good accounting has long since ceased to exist. But no one in the office noticed. Or no one wanted to notice. Until the Court of Auditors took action.

“The kindergarten checks by SPÖ and Neos are a joke,” railed ÖVP education spokesman Harald Zierfuss. And the turquoise chairman Karl Mahrer adds: “City councilor Wiederkehr finally makes himself unbelievable with the control failure of his authorities.”

Parents desperate for childcare
Hundreds of children need a new shelter from Monday. Many parents are desperate. The city confirms that there is a place for all children. The question is how fast this can be done.

Some families have received a commitment for April. Until then, they have to get by with a home office and babysitters.
