A tragic accident took place in Styria on Saturday: a 51-year-old ski tourer was alone on the Sarstein in the afternoon. He caused an avalanche and was swept away. He died at the scene of the accident, the Alpine police announced on Sunday.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when the 51-year-old in the municipality of Altaussee started a ski trip alone from the Pötschenpass to the Sarstein. At about 6,000 feet above sea level, he crossed a steep gully and dropped a patch of snow. The man was dragged by the snow masses and could not free himself.
An acquaintance has reported a missing person
A family member of the man reported missing on Saturday evening. The Alpine police, the mountain rescue service and the escape police finally discovered the man in the avalanche around midnight. However, a doctor present was only able to determine the death of the 51-year-old.
14 athletes in Vorarlberg hit by avalanche
Already in Vorarlberg there was an avalanche on the Drusenfluh in Montafon on Saturday. 14 ski tourers were hit and dragged along by the snow masses. Fortunately, everyone was saved from this incident – three people were taken to the hospital with injuries. According to the police, each of the athletes was equipped with complete emergency equipment, sometimes even with an avalanche airbag.
In February, avalanches killed a total of seven people in one weekend in Austria. Three winter sports enthusiasts died in St. Anton am Arlberg and in Kaunerberg (Landeck district), as well as a 17-year-old in Zillertal. In East Tyrol, a snowplow driver (59) suffered an accident after being caught in an avalanche and torn down 200 metres. In Längenfeld in the Ötztal, a Tyrolean (55) died under a piece of snow. A Chinese freerider (32) paid for this with his life for an excursion to open terrain.
