Two German touring skiers (34 and 35 years old) were hit by an avalanche on Sunday in the Sellraintal in Tyrol (submunicipality of Innsbruck-Land). The 34-year-old was completely buried. But thanks to his comrades, the man was saved. Also in Oberperfuss (also in Innsbruck-Land) a lot of snow fell.
Around 9 am on Sunday, a group of five went on a ski tour from the “Pforzheimer Hütte” in the direction of “Samerschlag”. At the height between “Metzgerstein” and “Samerschlag” they took off their skis and skied towards the flat ground in front of the “Pforzheimer Hütte”. “When they got there, they skinned their touring skis again and then climbed up towards the ‘Breite Scharte’,” police said.
Skis protrude from the snow masses
During this second ascent, an avalanche suddenly occurred over the group, and two of them were caught by the snow shelf, swept away and buried. The 34-year-old was completely buried, his 35-year-old comrade was partially buried. “During the search for the surface, the other three tour partners were able to identify the victim’s skis sticking out of the snow masses and then locate the man at a burial depth of about one and a half meters using an avalanche transceiver,” explains the management. The 34-year-old was flown by helicopter to the clinic in Innsbruck for further medical clarification.
Injured knee after fall
The snowfall in Oberperfuss ended to a lesser extent around 2 p.m. A 29-year-old German climbed there, accompanied by two friends from Stieglreith, on touring skis over the north ridge to the Rosskogel and was the first to descend the north channel from the top. “After about 200 meters, it caused a superficial layer of snow in the gully,” officials said. Noticing this, the winter sportsman immediately swerved to the right, fell and injured his left knee. The relatively small and superficial slab of snow couldn’t catch him. The German was rescued by the police helicopter and then taken to the clinic in Innsbruck by ambulance.
