“Not Muslim” – New clothing recommendation for women in Tajikistan

Date:

In Tajikistan, the authorities have issued a new dress code for women. They are not allowed to wear black, Muslim-influenced clothing or “half-naked European clothes”. Slippers and tops are not allowed.

The manual also advises against tight pants, miniskirts, nightgowns and thin dresses. At the same time, authorities advise girls and women not to wear black, Muslim-influenced clothing. The majority of the country’s approximately nine million people are Muslim. However, because the country’s authoritarian leadership fears that Islamist fundamentalists from neighboring Afghanistan will spread, it tightly controls the practice of religion.

Photos for all seasons
Photos of national clothes for all seasons can be seen in the manual, which has now been published. The accompanying campaign “Let’s dress in Tajik” runs until May 30. Girls and women should consciously wear traditional Tajik clothing during this time, it says.
