Until recently, Carinthia had been spared. But two weeks ago, the bird flu virus was also confirmed in a wild bird in this state. The detected subtype is highly pathogenic to birds. There is still a plea to comply with the stable obligation.
Two weeks ago, on March 3, a dead wild bird was found in the Villach Land district, in one of the 64 Carinthian municipalities classified as a risk area. The dead animal was taken to the AGES laboratory in Lower Austria for testing, where the H5N1 subtype (which causes severe disease in birds) was detected after testing. The H5N1 infection has not yet been identified in humans in Europe.
Mandatory parking in risk areas
The stable obligation for poultry farmers with 50 animals or more, which has been prescribed in risk areas since January 2023, remains in force. All poultry farms in the affected municipality of Villach Land are currently being contacted and preventive samples are being taken.
“Companies and hobby companies with more than 50 poultry must keep their animals in closed – at least covered – stables. Ducks and geese must be separated from other poultry,” said the state of Carinthia.
