No cell phone reception – ski tourer buried up to her belly by avalanche

Date:

A ski tourer experienced terrible moments in the Tyrolean Sellraintal on Monday afternoon: The Swiss woman, who had been on a ski tour with five colleagues, was attacked by an avalanche and buried up to her stomach. Because there was no mobile phone reception at the scene of the accident, one of the escorts had to drive to a nearby cabin and raise the alarm.

The group of six from Switzerland had made a ski tour from St. Sigmund to the 3081 meter high Zwieselbacher Rosskogel and reached the top around 13:30. After a short rest we went through the Walfeskar to the Pforzheimer Hütte (2310 meters), to go back to St. Sigmund via the Gleirschtal.

Woman swept away by a patch of snow
“Shortly after entering the Walfeskar, the group drove down through the cart at about 2750 meters above sea level. When the third ski tourer, a 56-year-old Swiss woman, suddenly unleashed a slab avalanche above her. She was hit by the snow masses and dragged several meters, the police said.

The woman was buried from the skis to her stomach. “Her torso and head were free, she was conscious and breathing. However, she complained of pain in her right lower leg.”

Sounded alarm from cabin
Your companions were not hit by the avalanche. They immediately rushed to the aid of their colleague and were able to dig her out. “Since there was no mobile phone reception at the scene of the accident, a group member drove to the Pforzheimer Hütte and started the rescue chain from there. The injured person was then recovered by the Martin 2 emergency medical helicopter and flown to the hospital in Hall.

The rest of the ski tourers decided not to ski anymore because of the warming up and the associated avalanche situation – they were flown into the valley with the police helicopter Libelle.
