The latest generation of activists regularly halt traffic in parts of major cities to draw attention to climate change and increase pressure on governments in Germany and Austria. In Germany, some cities are now trying to get around blockades using controversial deals.
The cities of Hanover, Tübingen and Marburg had recently publicly supported the demands of climate activists and in return had the group temporarily halt their adhesive campaigns. The German Association of Cities and Municipalities strongly criticizes these agreements. It is “not usual for criminals to be confronted with political promises,” said general director Gerd Landsberg of the German news agency on Tuesday.
Criticism: “Apart from attention, nothing for climate protection”
Landsberg accused the climate group: “The proceedings regularly involve criminal offenses such as coercion, dangerous intervention in road traffic and material damage.” The media followed this partly benevolently. But apart from attention, nothing is being done for climate protection. “Against this backdrop, we are extremely critical of similarities between cities and the last generation,” he added.
The German Association of Cities was more reserved. “Each city decides for itself whether the city politicians on the spot will enter into the conversation,” explains managing director Helmut Dedy. “In any case, climate protection is a high priority in all cities.” The cities collaborated with civil society groups and strived for climate neutrality. But they need support from the federal and state governments.
That is the central demand of the activists
The central demand of the last generation is the establishment of a society council with members chosen at random rather than elected. It must draw up binding plans to ensure that Germany no longer blows any additional greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from 2030 onwards. Germany is currently aiming for climate neutrality by 2045.
