The US government has issued a travel warning for Mexico. The Mexican head of state Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador cannot understand this at all and speaks of “paranoia”.
“There are no problems traveling safely in Mexico,” Lopez Obrador told reporters Monday. He criticized a US government request for its citizens to avoid travel to 30 of Mexico’s 32 states altogether or at least take additional precautions. The Mexican also added, “Mexico is safer than the US.”
The United States points, among other things, to the ever-escalating violence between drug gangs in Mexico. In early March, four American citizens were kidnapped in the north of the country near the US border – apparently by members of an influential drug cartel. Two of the US citizens were killed. The other two were later found alive – one of them had gunshot wounds, the other was unharmed.
Drug cartel apologizes for murders
According to local media, the alleged perpetrators have already been extradited by their cartel. A letter would have been handed over in which the criminal organization apologizes for the bloody deeds. “We have decided to hand over those responsible who (…) acted of their own accord and lack of discipline,” read the windshield of a pickup truck. The group does not attack innocent people, and such mistakes should not happen again, it said.
