Ukrainian military analysts have criticized the army command’s adherence to the Battle of Bakhmut. There was a threat of encirclement by Russian troops and the painful loss of troops needed for counter-offensives. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on civilians continue (see video above).
“We have information that Ukraine is sending reservists to Bakhmut who have been trained in Western countries. And we are suffering casualties among the reservists we wanted to use for counter-offensives,” Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said. “We could lose here everything we wanted to use for these counter-offensives.”
“Nothing bad can happen if you back off”
Ukrainian military historian Roman Ponomarenko said the threat of encirclement at Bakhmut was “very real”. “If we just give up on Bakhmut and withdraw our troops and equipment, nothing bad can happen,” Ponomarenko told Ukrainian Radio NV, “if they close the ring, we will lose men and equipment.”
About 30 kilometers northwest of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, the Russian army fired rockets into the center of the city of Kramatorsk on Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that at least seven people were injured and one was killed. According to Zelensky, these acts inevitably lead to “just” punishments. Six apartment buildings were damaged by the missile strike, he said.
Kill in further attacks
At least two people were killed and seven injured during the night in neighboring Kostyantynivka, authorities said. There were also several rocket attacks in the disputed city of Avdiivka. At least one person was killed and two others injured.
The front line runs about 20 kilometers east of Kramatorsk. Before the outbreak of the war, more than 140,000 people lived there. In December, about 80,000 people were said to have remained there.
Russia insists on violence
Meanwhile, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Moscow can only achieve its goals in Ukraine through military force. “We must achieve our goals. Due to the current position of the regime in Kiev, this is currently only possible with military means,” the Russian news agencies said.
The Russian leadership justifies the offensive war it has provoked – which it describes as a special military operation – with the protection of Russian-speaking people in eastern Ukraine. The Kiev government has been described as a Nazi regime from which Ukraine must be liberated.
