In action soon? – Poland promises fighter jets to Ukraine

Date:

Poland promises to deliver MiG-29 fighter jets to neighboring Ukraine within weeks to defend against Russia. The Ukraine hopes for modern Western machines, but the Soviet-developed MiG-29s give them a clear advantage…

The fighter jets could be delivered in the next four to six weeks, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday. He left open the number of these fighter jets developed in the Soviet Union.

Ukraine’s other allies remain cautious about relinquishing fighter jets. Ukraine has repeatedly asked its supporters for Western-type fighter jets to better secure its airspace against Russian attacks – the government in Kyiv especially wants the US-made F-16s, but also the Swedish Gripen and Eurofighter Typhoon.

Ukrainian pilots trained on MiG-29
The Ukrainian Air Force has the advantage of being able to fly the now promised Polish aircraft – A large part of the Kiev Air Force’s fleet consists of MiG-29 multirole fighters.

The supply of such weapons from Polish stocks had already been considered a year ago. Warsaw refused at the time so as not to bear the risk of Russian retaliation. Fearing an escalation, the US has always refused to supply fighter jets.

Slovakia could also deliver
Now the mood in NATO could turn: Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad has also said that it is time for his country’s government to decide on the supply of MiG fighter jets. Slovakia and Poland, which are part of NATO’s eastern flank, are major supporters of Ukraine. They have already played a major role in the decision of Western countries to also supply main battle tanks to Ukraine, such as the German-made Leopard.
