Also World Heritage – For missile defense: Moscow is now cutting down forests

Date:

Space is now being cleared for the Ministry of Defense in various districts in Moscow. The reason: S-400 anti-aircraft systems must be installed to protect the people and the state. Even forests are razed to the ground for this – even though they are part of the UNESCO cultural heritage. Is hysteria now rising in Russia?

While Russia is losing more and more soldiers in the offensive war against Ukraine, nerves at home also seem to be on the rise. For example, the protection zone of the Kolomenskoye open-air museum is used for missile defense.

Will the famous church lose its status?
A total of 100 hectares of forest was used for this purpose. Now local residents fear that the famous Church of the Ascension could lose its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Russian-language newspaper The Insider reports.

The Russian S-400 is considered one of the most powerful air defense systems in the world. It convinces in terms of target acquisition and range. The system does not only consist of one missile, but is spread over several vehicles and consists of radar, command unit and missile launcher.

Elk Island has also been affected
To “protect the land” part of the national park “Lossiny Ostrow”, also called Elk Island, is also sacrificed. More than 40 species of mammals call it home, including the eponymous moose, as well as fallow deer, wild boar, badgers, beavers, minks, and other animals, some of which are preserved nowhere else near Moscow.

S-400 near tall buildings
And various residents also have to do their part, because there is some military equipment near high-rise buildings. In addition, the new buildings in Moscow are not considered to be of particularly high quality – in many cases the quality is comparable to that of a log house. For many “Moskvich”, as the inhabitants of the Russian capital are called, this is not a pleasant combination.

Because the S-400 system can simultaneously hit 36 targets within a radius of 400 kilometers and up to an altitude of 27 kilometers. Since it is known that Russia is not very picky about security measures and maintenance work, people are constantly afraid that residential buildings can be accidentally “shot down”.

Moscow is preparing for an emergency
Since the beginning of 2023, reports of air defense systems in Moscow have been appearing again and again. An air defense system on the roof of the Russian Ministry of Defense caused a stir. The Pantsir-S1 that is there now weighs 35 tons and costs about 15 million euros. Rumor has it that it was installed there to repel direct attacks on the Russian capital.
