The free software ChatGPT mastered large parts of last year’s high school diploma in a test by the Lower Austrian Student Council. In the German course, for example, the text machine was assessed by teachers as sufficient or sufficient, depending on the subject.
The mathematics central matura for the AHS was just passed (18.5 out of 36 points). The chatbot achieved a good four in the subject and a solid three in parts of the English Matura, the student representatives announced on Wednesday. In English, where only part of the Matura was questioned (there are also listening tasks, NB), the software came through well on these points.
The test was performed relatively realistically: only the information was entered when entering ChatGPT. The direct answers spat out by the software were then evaluated – without correcting even the most obvious errors. The texts in German were then assessed by a team of teachers, the answers in mathematics and English by the student council itself (the solutions are published every year after the Matura, note).
Literature assignments best rated
Incidentally, the German teachers rated the theme package best (there are three to choose from) which also includes a literature assignment. Here ChatGPT got a pass and comments like “linguistically good except for a few spelling and repetition errors!” or “spelling well worked out, also in style, apart from a few unfavorable word repetitions”.
The other two packages were rated less well (e.g. “Almost wrong text form, more of a discussion, no linguistic resources, clear derivations in the fragment, no stylistic resources, just boring”).
