The Supreme Court rejected a complaint from the “Platform for Human Rights”.
For several years there have been a number of begging zones in the center of Salzburg – and it will probably remain so in the future. The “Platform for Human Rights” had turned to the Constitutional Court (VfGH) last year to overturn the ban. Now the Supreme Court has made a decision. The Constitutional Court refused to hear the complaint. Because this has “insufficient chance of success”, as the decision literally says.
Specifically, the “Platform for Human Rights” referred to the case of a woman from Romania. She had begged in Schanzlgasse and was fined 100 euros. The complaint against it now occupied the VfGH.
In the past, the Supreme Court has repeatedly considered the ban on begging in the city of Salzburg. In the years 2012 and 2017, the associated ordinances of the city council have been overturned. There is now an adapted and locally limited ban.
