Plan in UK – No more marriages for life sentences

Date:

The British government wants to ban criminals sentenced to life imprisonment from getting married. “I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said on Friday. A 54-year-old is currently demanding to marry his partner in prison.

He was sentenced to two life sentences for the murders of two young women and a 13-year-old. Now he wants to marry his partner, but the British Minister of Justice is against. “The question arises what the risk is for anyone who would marry such a scandalous offender (…)”, he said on Friday. He plans to change the law accordingly, but this could conflict with the European Convention on Human Rights, which explicitly mentions the right to marry.

Raab had therefore repeatedly proposed reducing the influence of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights on Britain with a so-called Bill of Rights, which should be based on “common sense”. It is estimated that around 60 people in the UK are serving life sentences with no prospect of parole.

Downing Street: “Very inappropriate”
The killer involved has now applied for state legal aid to challenge a decision. “There is no question that taxpayers’ money will be used for some sort of celebration,” Raab said. Downing Street has announced that it will soon publish details of the proposed law. It is “very inappropriate” that serious criminals are allowed to marry.
