Shots at celebration – Mexico: 14-year-old allegedly killed 8 people

Date:

In Mexico, a 14-year-old is said to be involved in the murder of eight people. The police accuse him of shooting at the guests of a birthday party in January with another suspect. According to experts, numerous minors are criminally organized in Mexico.

The incident happened in January in the city of Chimalhuacán, the security ministry said Thursday. Three people died immediately after the shots were fired at the birthday party and five others died in hospitals. In addition, seven people were injured, including two children aged three and 14. According to the media, the act could be related to drug trafficking.

Ten suspects arrested
The police have now been able to arrest ten suspects, including a 14-year-old and the 28-year-old alleged leader of the gang. According to the Ministry of Security, the attackers arrived on motorcycles and then opened fire on the guests.

Mexico has been suffering from a wave of violence for years. Last year, more than 31,936 murders were recorded (out of a population of 126 million). Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups vie for control of areas of influence and smuggling routes. They often have connections with corrupt politicians and security forces. Most murders are never solved.

Drugged minors
Experts estimate that there are also numerous minors in criminal organizations. The case of a 14-year-old arrested in 2010 for contract killings and torture for the notorious South Pacific cartel made headlines. The boy, known as “El Ponchis”, had been sentenced to three years in prison for four counts of murder and membership in a criminal organization.

After the arrest, he said: “They forced me. If I didn’t they would kill me, they said.” He also used drugs.
