US President Joe Biden has called the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin “justified”. The move sends “a very strong signal,” Biden said Friday (local time).
Putin has “clearly committed war crimes,” the US president told reporters in Washington (see tweet below). A year ago, Biden described Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “murderous dictator”.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Friday that it has issued an arrest warrant for Putin and his children’s rights commissioner Maria Alexeyevna Lvowa-Belowa for abducting Ukrainian children to Russia during the war in Ukraine. Neither the US nor Russia recognizes the legitimacy of the ICC.
More than 16,000 children have been abducted from Ukraine to Russia or Russian-controlled areas since February this year, according to the Ukrainian government. The ICC had already launched investigations immediately after the outbreak of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine in February 2022.
