Since the Russian attack on Ukraine and the associated tensions with NATO, the number of military encounters with Russian aircraft over the Baltic has increased. The alarm went off again on Friday.
A British-German alarm team rose to intercept four Russian aircraft, the German air force announced. First, the Eurofighters identified a Tu-134 passenger jet, then two Su-27 fighter jets and finally an AN-12 transport aircraft. The Sukhoi Su-27 is the main fighter of the Russian Air Force. Two such jets were involved in the explosive incident over the Black Sea in which a US drone crashed.
According to the German Air Force, the aircraft had not responded to radio contact. They were then escorted out of NATO airspace.
NATO airspace is jointly monitored
The NATO Eurofighters then returned to Ämari Air Force Base in Estonia. The German Air Force has been stationed there since August as part of Operation “Baltic Air Policing” and has been securing the airspace over the Baltic Sea together with the Royal Air Force since March. The NATO contingents regularly take turns in the surveillance of the airspace.
The Eurofighters are operational around the clock. Incidents keep happening. First On Tuesday, German and British fighter jets intercepted a Russian refueling plane and a regional jet that were in NATO airspace without permission.
