The fire in an empty building located between two former storage silos in Schwechat on the city limits of Vienna led to a large-scale intervention by the fire brigade on Sunday night. Firefighting operations continued on Sunday morning. No injuries have been reported so far.
Shortly before midnight, the Vienna professional fire brigade and the Schwechat volunteer fire brigade were called to the burning building in Schwechat’s Innerbergerstraße, the Schwechat volunteer fire brigade announced. The volunteer fire brigade in Mannswörth, Rannersdorf, Kledering and Himberg, as well as the company fire brigade at Vienna-Schwechat Airport and the Schwechat brewery were alerted.
Train traffic suspended
The fire is now under control and will continue to be extinguished by the fire brigade, according to FF Schwechat. Firefighting efforts are likely to last into the early morning. Due to a nearby railway line, train traffic was halted, a spokesperson for the Vienna fire brigade told APA.
Currently, about 90 volunteers from Lower Austria are at work. They are supported by the Viennese fire brigade with 41 men, eleven vehicles and two large tankers, a spokesman said. There are a total of 28 vehicles, including two revolving ladder vehicles and an airport fire truck. The professional rescue service in Vienna and the Red Cross in Schwechat are also on duty.
