Kim leads maneuvers – North Korea simulated “nuclear counterattack”

Date:

According to state media, North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un over the weekend led a military maneuver to “simulate a nuclear counterattack”. This also included launching a missile equipped with a dummy warhead, it said.

Kim expressed its “satisfaction” with the exercises, which were held “to familiarize relevant entities with the procedures and processes to conduct their tactical nuclear strike mission,” North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said Monday.

Largest military exercise in five years
The exercises were Pyongyang’s fourth demonstration of power in a week as part of a joint maneuver between South Korea and the United States that began Monday. The largest military exercise in five years is expected to last until Thursday. North Korea views the maneuvers as preparation for an invasion of North Korea and has repeatedly threatened “overwhelming measures”.

The exercises on Saturday and Sunday included exercises simulating the transition to a nuclear counterattack and an exercise to “launch a tactical ballistic missile armed with a dummy warhead,” according to KCNA. “The missile was armed with a test warhead that simulated a nuclear warhead,” the agency later said without providing further details.

South Korea sees “serious provocation”
The short-range missile launched by North Korea has landed in the sea, according to the South Korean General Staff. He spoke of a “serious provocation” in violation of UN sanctions and announced an investigation by the secret services of the United States and South Korea.

Seoul and Washington have stepped up their defense cooperation in response to North Korea’s mounting military and nuclear threats.
