Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022, Turkey has been trying to act as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev. But now the government in Ankara has given in to pressure from the West and has pledged to stop supplying goods subject to sanctions against Russia.
The Turkish government has provided companies with a list of banned foreign goods and ordered them to stop transhipping to Russia, Cetin Tecdelioglu, head of the Istanbul Association of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters, said Monday. “All goods on this list are blocked for Russia, regardless of which country they come from,” Tectelioglu said.
This has been confirmed by a representative of the European Union. Ankara has verbally assured the European Commission that from March no more goods will reach Russia subject to EU, US or UK sanctions and export controls. Turkey’s Commerce Ministry declined to comment.
“Severe Warnings” from the EU
Given the “dire warnings” from Western countries, this is an opportunity to avoid a confrontation with the EU, where half of Turkey’s exports are under a common customs union, company representative Tecdelioglu said. “There was a list of restrictions on re-exports from free trade zones to Russia,” he said. However, goods produced in Turkey, even with components from other countries, can still be delivered to Russia without restrictions.
