On a new map, China marks 100 square kilometers of Russian territory – suddenly Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island is part of the People’s Republic. Russian President Vladimir Putin must accept this power-political calculation without resistance, because his country depends on Beijing’s goodwill.
At the end of August, the Ministry of Natural Resources published a new version of the “national map of China”. It is a highly official document and used by schools, universities and media in the country.
Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island was captured by Moscow forces only in 1929 during the Soviet-Chinese War. In 2004 Russia had to give the western half to China. In principle, it was planned that the eastern part would always remain with Russia. But now Beijing is seizing the opportunity and showing its true colors.
Cold calculation
Because you can no longer speak of true friendship here. Russia, now heavily dependent on China, will hardly be able to counter this, as Beijing is, as it were, the last savior after the massive sanctions imposed on the belligerent country. But this is not happening without ulterior motives, because Beijing is buying record quantities of Russian oil at low prices.
Chinese blinded by state propaganda
Discontent is spreading in Russian circles close to the state. However, the Chinese people have a different view of things. Thanks to widespread censorship, she manages to convey that the territorial dispute is just a “Western conspiracy.” It is said to be simply meant to drive a wedge between Beijing and Moscow.
