In Wallern, Burgenland, garbage collectors discovered a skull while cleaning the perimeter corridor. The National Investigation Department took over the case.
As is always the case at this time of year, clean-up crews are currently out and about in many places simply cleaning up trash dumped along sidewalks or in pastures and disposing of it properly. The environmentally friendly action of 50 volunteers last weekend in Wallern im Seewinkel was overshadowed by a special find.
At a gravel pit outside the village, David Gelbmann and his companions found a skull on the ground next to a goods road at around 11 a.m. on Saturday during the floor cleaning organized by the municipality. There was only straw in the head.

“Perhaps an animal had made itself comfortable in the bony shelter,” was the first guess. “We immediately called the police. Officials arrived 15 minutes later and picked up the skull,” says Gelbmann.
The grisly find was then forwarded to the Eisenstadt detectives’ office for detailed investigation. It must first be determined which deceased person’s skull and crossbones could belong to. The detectives began their detailed work on Monday.
