An accident occurred on Monday morning during forestry work on the Altenmarkt near St. Gallen (Liezen district). A 29-year-old man was seriously injured.
The accident happened around 10:30 am. On steep terrain, several forest workers wanted to fell a crooked tree more than 15 meters long. The tree was secured over a tractor with a rope and pulley. When felling, the tree may be slightly twisted due to its curvature.
Worker ran under falling trunk
Suddenly, a 29-year-old Romanian forester unexpectedly ran towards the falling tree and was hit in the head and neck and thrown to the ground. Because he had ended up in a hollow in the terrain, at least he wasn’t stuck under the trunk.
He was rescued by the mountain rescue service and flown to the UKH Linz in a Christophorus helicopter. He is now in intensive care with a serious head injury. The labor inspectorate in Leoben is now investigating the exact circumstances of the forest accident. However, according to the police report, all regulations such as protective clothing or safety distances were observed. It is not clear why the employee suddenly took off.
