The European population is largely lagging behind the population of Ukraine. This is the conclusion of a current survey of 13,000 people by the Bertelsmann Foundation. According to this report, almost two-thirds (65 percent) of Europeans are in favor of Ukraine joining the EU in the coming years.
About six in ten respondents (61 percent) also welcome the fact that the EU is supporting Ukraine with arms. At the same time, the fear of war in Germany is on the rise, as revealed by a special study by R+V Versicherung’s long-running study “The Fears of the Germans”. 63 percent fear that our neighboring country will not be able to defend itself, slightly less (55 percent) that it will become a war party itself.
Fear of involvement in war
“The poor state of the Bundeswehr is clearly reflected in the results of our special investigation,” said study leader Grischa Brower-Rabinowitsch. Concerns that Germany is unable to defend have increased unusually since the summer. There was only a higher value for war involvement in 1999 during the Kosovo war.
For the study, 1000 people were asked online about their fear of war. In contrast, the Bertelsmann Foundation survey surveyed 13,000 people across the EU. In an Austrian poll in July 2022, the majority voted against Ukraine joining the EU.
The country is a candidate country. The war in Ukraine started more than a year ago. Since then, inflation has risen around the world and the economy has slowed in many countries. The US government is Ukraine’s largest donor, followed by the EU. The German government continues to supply arms, even after initial hesitation.
