Pastor as an internet star: ‘I’m quite conservative’

Date:

The “Krone” spoke to the German pastor Thomas Eschenbacher, who rapped his sermon and thus mutated into an internet star. He had no idea his performance would make such waves.

“crown”: Pastor, nearly two million people saw your performance when you rapped the sermon in costume. What do you think?
Thomas Eschenbacher: It was Shrove Tuesday, and anyone who knows me knows that I come up with something new every time during Shrove Tuesday. Frankly, I did not expect such a wave in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. But since Corona we broadcast two services a week live on the internet, which is probably why it came about.

How were the reactions to your rap performance?
The majority received it positively, but of course there were also negative reactions on the internet. But I knew that beforehand. Some even thought I had betrayed the gospel. But that is absolute nonsense! In addition, the sermon in rap form was only part of the entire service. I was impressed that some who actually deal with rap music announced that the rhyming technique and craftsmanship were not bad. For us in Franconia that means it was good.

How long have you actually been in office and worthy as a man of God?
I have been a priest and youth pastor for 30 years. Basically I am quite conservative, but I also try to incorporate the guitar as a stylistic element in my fairs. I also know my seven parishes, where about 6,000 Catholics live. And they know I would never force anything on them.
