The number of asylum applications in the EU has risen sharply for the second year in a row. In 2022, 881,200 first applications were made in the 27 member states, the EU’s statistical authority Eurostat reported on Thursday. Compared to last year, this means an increase of 64 percent or no less than 340,000 applications. Austria is particularly affected.
With 217,735 applications (25 percent), as in previous years, most applications were made in Germany. France (16 percent), Spain (13 percent), Austria with 106,380 (12 percent) and Italy (9 percent) follow.
Austria the second hardest hit
Relative to the size of the population, most applications were made in Cyprus, followed by Austria (11,848 per million inhabitants) and Luxembourg. Germany is only in tenth place here.
4.3 million Ukrainians admitted
In addition, EU countries granted protection to more than 4.3 million people from Ukraine against Russia’s offensive war. They do not have to apply for asylum. The war has been going on since February last year.
Main countries of origin Syria, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Turkey
As every year since 2013, most asylum seekers in Europe came from the civil war country of Syria, almost 132,000 in total. This corresponds to 15 percent of all first applications. This is followed by Afghanistan (13 percent) and Venezuela and Turkey (each almost six percent).
