The original version of Mickey Mouse is now available in the public domain. This means: the black and white cartoon character no longer belongs to Disney, but to everyone. The same goes for Minnie. But this only means the 1928 original!
Companies all over the world have been waiting for this: the first movie previews are already available. In “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” (trailer below), the cartoon character becomes a masked killer who sends his victims through deadly traps.
And video game manufacturer Nightmare Forge Games will let players fight a terrifying version of Mickey from “Steamboat Willie” in the upcoming game “Infestation 88.”
Newer versions of Mickey and Minnie remain subject to Disney copyright. And: Anyone using the original mouse for their own purposes should make it clear that Disney is not the manufacturer or distributor of the products.
