The brutal murder of Luise (12) by girls of the same age turned the small German town of Freudenberg into a vale of tears. Crimes against life and limb among young people are also on the rise in Austria. The “crown” shows the statistics.
12-year-old Luise was stabbed in Germany by friends of the same age. The case also sparked a discussion in our country about lowering the age of criminal responsibility. Currently, perpetrators can be tried from the age of 14. After falling during the pandemic, the number of young people in prison is rising again (see graph).
In Austria, 84 perpetrators aged 14 to 18 were detained on March 1, 2021, on March 1, 2023 there were already 116 young people in prison. Interestingly, prison sentences for crimes against life and limb are increasing in this age group – from 25 in 2019 to 38 today.
For lawyer Christian Werner, who is confronted with this in his daily work as a criminal lawyer, there is a reason for this: “We are seeing a huge knife phenomenon,” he reports, “for many young people it is normal to have a knife in their pocket. This is extremely dangerous, because as a result someone can quickly be seriously injured or even die”, the lawyer sees an urgent need for action.
