North Korea says it has tested underwater nuclear drone. The new weapon could create a “radioactive tsunami” and destroy ships and ports, state news agency KCNA reported Friday.
The military tested the weapon system called “Haeil” during a maneuver. “This underwater nuclear strike drone can be deployed to any coast or port, or towed to the operation by a surface craft.”
The underwater drone was on the road for 59 hours
The “secret weapon” was reportedly launched off North Korea’s east coast and a test warhead was detonated on Thursday. At that time, she would have been at a depth of 80 to 150 meters for more than 59 hours
The Central Military Commission ordered the maneuver “to warn the enemy of an actual nuclear crisis and to verify the reliability of the nuclear force for self-defense,” KCNA reported.
Heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula
Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased dramatically recently. The Communist leadership in Pyongyang has repeatedly threatened military escalation in the region. In the face of North Korea’s continued provocations, South Korea and the United States have stepped up their defense cooperation. They had recently embarked on their largest joint military exercise in five years.
