A short running course, an approaching organ failure and then God thanks a medical life chain in the Waldviertel that really worked well …
What initially felt like a classic painful muscles turned out to be a dramatic emergency situation in a 26-year-old woman: a so-called crush syndrome the decline of skeleton muscles, which can then cause acute kidney failure. After an intensive rotating training, the patient had gone to the university hospital with severe legs and blood pain in the urine.
First suspicion was not confirmed
“First of all, the suspected diagnosis of urinary tract infection in the Chamber was,” reports Senior Arts Dr. Bernhard Grubmüller, who works in the clinical department for urology in Krems. But the combination of the symptoms made him notice: “The intensity of the pain, blood and physical condition of the patient were striking-mine suspicion soon fell on a crush syndrome that started.” Blood values were increased for clarification.
800 times above normal value
The suspicion was confirmed: the Creatinkinase, a marker for muscle damage, was 800 times above the standard. The state clinic horn was added immediately, more precisely the Nephrology department and internal Intensive Care Medicine led by Primaria Dr. ir. Julia Kerschbaum. The young woman can be stabilized there – thanks to early flowing and intensive medical supervision.
“In such a case, every hour counts,” emphasizes Kerschbaum. “If the diagnosis was later made, an acute kidney failure could have occurred – in the worst case with permanent damage or obligation obligation.”
Eight days in the hospital
After eight days, the patient could be released without permanent restrictions. A medical exception – but also an example of how important the national interplay of specialized departments is. “This was teamwork at the highest level,” summarizes Grubmüller. “We would not have achieved this result without the close collaboration with Horn.”
And the case also has a clear message for sporting active people: sore muscles is normal – but when pain escalates, you really have to take them seriously.
