‘Spreading lies’ – Hungary ‘delays Sweden’s entry into NATO’

Date:

The postponement of the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO by the Hungarian parliament continues to cause tensions between the two countries.

While Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expects an explanation for the delayed ratification from his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán at the EU summit, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s political director and namesake, Balázs Orbán, justified the delay with hostile statements from Swedish politicians. They had repeatedly spread lies about Hungary.

Jessika Roswall of the party “The Moderates”, today the Swedish EU minister, was also quoted in June 2021 as saying “It is already now essential that the EU act uniformly and stop payments to Hungary in the new mechanism”. Balázs Orbán also criticized the fact that Johan Pehrson, then leader of the Liberal parliamentary group and now Minister of Labour, described the Hungarian government as xenophobic and nationalist in May 2022. It would violate the rule of law and refuse aid to Ukraine.

“Good Morning Stockholm”
These statements make it clear that the Hungarian parliament is delaying the ratification of Sweden’s NATO accession, unlike the Finns, which will be voted on next week (see video above), the director said. He ended his statement with the words “Good morning, Stockholm”.
