The French government has announced that with “immediate effect”, the official mobile phones of officials will not be able to download “recreational applications”, a measure that affects the social network TikTok, but also other types of services such as those of “streams”.
The order comes from the Minister of Transformation and the Public Function, after an analysis of the challenges of this type of application, “especially in terms of security”, and that several international partners have taken action against the Chinese company TikTok.
Paris believes that leisure applications “offer insufficient levels of cybersecurity and data protection to be installed on administrative equipment”, so it has opted for a blanket veto that leaves permissions open in an “exceptional” way if someone proves they have “professional needs” to have.
Last February, the US government ordered the removal of TikTok from all official devices, a decision also adopted by the European Commission. However, the Chinese government denounces an alleged political intent behind such measures.
