Injured in hospital – blind spot: overloaded truck hits police officer

Date:

It can go that fast! When he had to park his completely overloaded small truck in a parking lot at the Burgenland-Hungarian border and reverse quickly, a driver overlooked a police officer. The stern hit the group inspector hard. He had to be treated in hospital.

Pedestrians, cyclists or children can quickly get into the blind spots of cars and trucks – then things get dangerous! A group inspector at the border crossing in Schachendorf found himself in such a delicate situation. During a priority check, he and his colleague stopped a small truck that was clearly overloaded.

Continue forbidden
In fact, the van had exceeded the permitted weight of 3.5 tons by 400 kilograms. Transit was prohibited and the Romanian driver was requested to park his small truck in a parking lot. To prevent a collision with oncoming transit traffic during the necessary turning manoeuvre, the group inspector positioned himself behind the transport vehicle and gave the prescribed hand signals.

The policeman was only briefly in the blind spot – the driver did not see him and drove back abruptly. The back of the small truck hit the officer’s right shoulder, the force nearly knocking him over. The police officer was taken to Oberwart Hospital in great pain.

Technical guardian angels
“I just didn’t notice the officer,” said the Romanian driver during the interrogation. Indeed it was. Because the “Herr Inspector” was briefly in the blind spot. “These are the areas around a vehicle that the driver cannot see. This is usually next to, behind and directly in front of a car or truck,” explains a traffic engineer.

To prevent dangerous incidents, the Rijkswegendienst’s commercial vehicles are therefore equipped with turn assistants, among other things. The technical guardian angels warn the drivers in time. “The ultrasonic sensor system on the right side of the vehicle monitors the area that is not always visible when the turn signal is switched on. The warning is given by a red flashing LED display and acoustically by a beep.
