Protest action in Vienna – gas conference: bridge blocked, Danube colored!

Date:

The European gas conference, which will be held in Vienna from next Monday, will – that much is certain – be accompanied by protests. Activists are also expected from abroad. However, the – partly unannounced – campaigns started earlier than originally announced…

Already on Saturday morning there was a blockade by environmental activists. According to the Viennese police, the Salztor Bridge on Schwedenplatz was targeted by protesters. People posted themselves with banners on the zebra crossing, others sat on the ground, tied to oil barrels.

The activists also dumped a dye in the Danube Canal, turning the water a bright green. Several participants also rappelled off the bridge, with a banner hanging from the ropes reading: “Get out of gas and oil”.

Protests also possible on Sunday
But there could also be protests on Sunday, the police said. However, no events have been recorded, it said.

The larger protests against the conference, which will take place March 27-29 at an unspecified downtown hotel, are expected to begin Monday morning. Verena Gradinger, spokeswoman for the social alliance “Blockgas”, in a broadcast expected that “hundreds of demonstrators would travel to Vienna for the protests”.

Protests against ‘Who’s who’ of the destructive gas industry’
In addition, leading voices of the “Fridays For Future” movement across Europe have announced their protest against the “‘Who’s Who’ of the destructive gas industry”. The Last Generation group is not planning its own protests.

It is better to transfer to public transport
In any case, the police warned as a precaution. Especially in the city center “significant traffic disruption” can be expected in the coming days. It was therefore recommended to use public transport.
