Nighttime use – Major rescue operation for ski tourers in East Tyrol

Date:

Because her husband (36) did not return from a ski trip on the Glorberg in Kals am Großglockner, his wife alerted the emergency services on Saturday evening. A large-scale search was launched and was ultimately successful: the man was found and rescued – albeit not as planned.

The 36-year-old went on a ski tour in the Weißer Knot area on Saturday and stopped at the Glorer Hütte. From there he went back to the valley about 9:30 pm, but did not arrive there. His wife eventually raised the alarm.

Together with two mountain police guides, the Kals mountain rescue team climbed up from the Lucknerhütte in the direction of the Glorer Hütte, where other mountain police guides were staying at the time. This group started their search from above and made their way through the valley. The police helicopter Libelle was also requested from Klagenfurt.

Helicopter had to abort
A localization attempt finally brought success to the search: the alpinist was found at 2,314 meters above sea level. A rescue attempt with the police helicopter had to be called off due to bad weather. Instead, mountain rescuers and Alpine police treated the injured man on the ground and then took him to Kals in the valley. From there, the 36-year-old was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Lienz.
