Monday will be violent – Munich: airport paralyzed on Sunday

Date:

In Germany, an extensive warning strike in traffic will start at midnight on Sunday. The strike is expected to last 24 hours and is likely to cause major disruptions and congestion in the transport sector. The strike will also lead to enormous obstacles in rail and air traffic in Austria. Munich airport was already on strike on Sunday and all twelve flights between Munich and Vienna were canceled.

Ground staff, for example from the security check and baggage handling, had already finished their work at Munich airport on Sunday. An airport spokeswoman said all regular takeoffs and landings had been canceled and there were only ambulance and emergency flights. All originally planned 1,500 connections were canceled on both days. Some travelers who had booked connecting flights were stranded at the airport.

The strike will affect Austria
But not only aviation will be affected on Monday, long-distance rail traffic will also come to a complete standstill and regional traffic will largely come to a standstill. Almost all German airports went on strike, but not Berlin Airport. Waterways and ports and the motorway company are also affected.

The strike will also have major consequences in Austria. All train connections via the Deutsches Eck are affected. A shuttle service will be set up every two hours. Trips can take up to three hours longer. Trains to and from Germany will be shortened or cancelled.

Flight connections to Germany are cancelled
Many flight connections with the neighboring country will also be cancelled. According to information from Vienna Airport, all flight connections between Vienna and Munich, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Stuttgart will be canceled on Monday. There are also individual cancellations of flight connections to and from Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne. There are flights to and from Germany that may be affected by the strikes in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz and Klagenfurt.

With the warning strikes, the Verdi trade union and the railway and transport union (EVG) want to increase the pressure in their current collective bargaining negotiations. Under tense circumstances, Verdi and the civil service association dbb will meet the municipalities and the federal government again in Potsdam on Monday. Here begins the third round of negotiations for 2.5 million workers. Both parties are still far from each other, but an agreement in the following days cannot be ruled out.
