Netanyahu has released a brief statement announcing Gallant’s departure, explaining that he has lost confidence in him because “he has turned behind the government’s back,” the Israeli press reported. Netanyahu is on an official visit to the UK.

Gallant remains a deputy from Netanyahu’s Likud party, but it is unknown if he will remain in government, the result of a complicated balance of power between the right-wing and far-right parties that make up Netanyahu’s coalition.

Gallant on Saturday broke the Israeli government’s monolithic defense of the controversial judicial reform promoted by Netanyahu that has plunged the country into a deep political crisis amid opposition protests, which threaten the division of powers to the jaws.

“I have never seen the level of hatred and pain I see now. The divisions in society are reaching the military (the reservists have shown themselves against the reform) and this poses an immediate and tangible threat to the security of the state. No, I’m going to give in to this. We have to change the judiciary, but important changes have to be made through dialogue. The legislative process has to stop,” Gallant said in a televised address.

12 weeks of protests

More of 630,000 people (300,000 of them in Tel Aviv) have taken to the streets of major cities Israel for protest against controversy judicial reform promoted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, according to organizers’ records.

This is all the 12th consecutive week of protests against judicial reform, and the most massive, with record numbers, as it coincided with Secretary Gallant’s announcement.

The judicial reform would give the government full control over the appointment of Supreme Court judges and prevent courts from vetoing rules passed by parliament. The rule should be finalized next week.
