Highly respected award – author Marie Ndiaye is honored in Austria

One thing is certain: the French writer Marie NDiaye will receive this year the Austrian State Prize for European Literature, which has been awarded by the Ministry of Culture since 1965. The prize, worth 25,000 euros, will then be officially awarded to the 54-year-old writer in a ceremony at the Salzburger Festspiele.

State Secretary for Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens) announced this on Tuesday. NDiaye succeeds Scotland’s Ali Smith, who took the honor in 2022.

“Whoever thinks that everything is fine in our liberal, prosperous society is wrong. You only have to open a Marie NDiaye novel and you know that there is a lot wrong,” Mayer paid tribute to the writer: “NDiaye’s books are complex, crystal-clear analyzes of the present that address current issues such as gender, origin, skin color and social Taking up and pursuing Class into the finest ramifications of interpersonal relationships.”

“One of the best of our time”
In its motivation, the jury also emphasized the broad impact of the author: “She literally experienced Europe, lived with her family for many years in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.” Long among the best of our time. This author is stylistically brilliant, a master of drawing characters. She captivates her audience with ingenious storytelling styles and always hints at abysses.”

NDiaye has become known as a prose author, winning with works such as “The dear relatives” (1993), “All my friends” (2006), “My heart in the narrows” (2008) and most recently “The revenge is mine” ( 2021 ) also has a German-speaking readership. However, she also celebrated successes in the theater with plays such as “Hilda” and “The Snakes”.
