The Austrian Alpine Association (ÖAV) warns of a forged letter currently in circulation. In it, the Alpine Club reportedly proposes the “establishment of an Islamic division” in the organization and “the attachment of a crescent moon to a mountain peak of common choice”.
The forged document is currently being distributed via instant messaging services such as WhatsApp, the Alpine Club warned on its website. The same letter had already been exposed as a forgery in 2006. Only the date was exchanged in the file that is currently in circulation, which is easy to see visually.
Writing caused a sensation in 2006
The letter that circulated was picked up and put forward during the election campaign of the National Council by then BZÖ chairman and top candidate Peter Westenthaler. It involved a false exchange of letters between the Alpenclub and the former integration officer of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria and SPÖ MP Omar Al-Rawi, which Westenthaler apparently fell for.
Final verdict against the BZÖ
According to the Alpine Club, there is a legally binding judgment against the BZÖ, according to which the statement should be publicly retracted that it was a letter from the current Alpine Club President and then ÖAV Vice-President Andreas Ermacora.
“The grounds of the judgment expressly state that the Alpine Club is an independent and party-politically neutral organisation. Anyone who damages this reputation must count on our resistance,’ explained lawyer Ermacora at the time.
