A few days after a shooting that killed six people at a private school in Tennessee, the US state of Florida relaxed its gun laws. In the future, citizens will be allowed to carry concealed weapons there without a special permit. The state senate on Thursday (local time) passed the new rule, backed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, by a clear majority.
Appropriate training and an application with appropriate verification from the applicant were previously required for concealed carry of weapons in Florida. Anyone wishing to carry a concealed weapon in Florida in the future will only need an identification document such as a driver’s license. However, only people over the age of 21 are allowed to purchase a gun, and a so-called “background check” is also required to verify the purchaser. Convicted criminals are also not allowed to buy a gun.
Carrying concealed weapons will soon be legal in 26 states
27 senators voted for the bill in the Florida Senate in the capital Tallahassee, 13 against. Gov. DeSantis, considered the likely Republican presidential nominee for the 2024 election, vowed to sign the bill into law soon. Concealed carry is currently legal in 25 states, DeSantis said at a book launch at a Georgia gun store, adding, “We in Florida are making it 26.”
