The small and heavily protected field hamsters are said to have nestled in the area of the state firefighting competitions this year. Within the fire service, the subject is already causing hilarity in many regions.
The native field hamster lives on the grounds for the 2023 state fire brigade competitions in Leobersdorf in the Baden district. Of course, the organizers of the event took it less humorously. “It’s all about the campsite. We will meet all the requirements,” says Werner Heiden, the commander of the fire brigade in Leobersdorf, confidently. Do what the authorities ask.
10,000 participants in the dark
After the pandemic, they want to get off to a flying start this year for the first time since 2019, says Heiden: 10,000 participants in 1,000 groups are expected. The fire teams usually camp at a campsite not far from the festival and competition grounds. But the cute and strictly protected rodent is already “sleeping” there this year, and it seems that one cannot seriously imagine that there would be serious problems from the authorities because of the three-day event. “But the topic is not over yet,” senior fire officials say for the country’s largest competition event.
No conditions for applications yet
The fact that the Lower Austrian Nature Conservation Department is currently hot on the heels of the Florianis and proceedings are pending is hereby confirmed: “A final assessment is not yet available.” However, there can also be no conditions. The hamster occurrence was first documented there in 2012, but how many are currently alive is not known. Two things should already be certain for this year’s state games: there won’t be a mascot, and if the rodent gets a name, it certainly won’t be called “Florian.”
